Samyang 12mm f/2 time-lapse

This is a time-lapse shot on Fujifilm X-T1 and Samyang 12mm f/2.0 lens. This was to test how well the Samyang lens performed in this demanding type of shooting situation.

The Samyang 12mm f/2 is a fully manual lens which makes it ideal for time-lapse photography because the aperture diaphragm doesn’t contract every time the shutter is released.

One of the problems with using autofocus lenses for shooting time-lapse photography is that the contracting aperture creates flicker, which needs to be removed using software. One way to reduce and in some cases eliminate this is to use a manual lens, and the Samyang 12mm f/2 performs perfectly.

Samyang 12mm f/2 time-lapse example

The camera used for the time-lapse was a Fujifilm X-T1, and exposure was set more towards the sky with the shadows lifted and highlights recovered slightly in Lightroom for a more even overall exposure. The time-lapse was shot on a summer evening at John Webb’s Mill in Thaxted, Essex.

A versatile lens

The Samyang 12mm f/2 is a great lens for video, time-lapse, astro and landscape photography, and is certainly worth considering if you shoot with Fujifilm X-mount, Sony E-mount or Canon M cameras. It is available for Micro Four Thirds, but with these cameras the effective focal length isn’t as wide because of the smaller sensor.

About the Samyang 12mm f/2

The Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS Lens is a prime wide-angle lens designed specifically for use with APS-C sized image sensors. Providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm and a broad 98.9° angle of view, this lens is well-suited for architectural, interior, and landscape images. Its fast f/2.0 maximum aperture is further beneficial to working in lowlight conditions.

Three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements have been incorporated into the optical design to minimise chromatic aberrations and distortion in order to produce sharper images.

A Nano Coating System (NCS) has been applied to the lens elements in order to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery

  • Prime wide-angle lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 18mm, making it ideally suited for architectural and landscape subjects.
  • Fast f/2.0 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions.
  • Three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions in order to produce sharper images.
  • Nano Coating System improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
